Kids learn the fun of flyfishing

Special-education students participating in a three-week enrichment program at Carson High School traveled to Barney's Flyfishing Ranch in Minden last week for several hours of fishing fun.

Accompanying them were teachers Kim Shepherd and Karen Bianchi, assistants Steve Cook, Melody Pace and Shawna Sterton and volunteers Carly Bianchi, Sarah White, Mercedes Letender and Brice Sterton.

The 18 students enrolled in the program are from Carson and Eagle Valley middle schools and Carson High School.

Students had an opportunity to fish and visit each pond. Student Anthony Blackwell caught the first fish of the day. Largemouth bass were the only fish taking the fly during the morning hours the students visited. A total of five bass were caught.

Students have participated in various activities during the summer, including: bowling, hiking, bird identification at Washoe State Park, swimming, and viewing an Antarctica presentation.
