The Chancel Choir of Carson Valley United Methodist Church will present A Service of Darkness for its annual Good Friday Service at 7 p.m. Friday. The public is invited to this free musical presentation.
The seven choral meditations by composer Dale Wood are based on the last words of Christ.
"'A Service of Darkness' commemorates the suffering and death of Christ," Wood says, "and is based on the ancient Tenebrae. Dating from the 8th century, Tenebrae was originally celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Holy Week. It represented the darkness that fell over the earth as the Son of God was crucified."
Following the Chancel Choir's presentation of "A Service of Darkness," there will be an opportunity for silent meditation, and congregants will be invited to affix their prayer request to a wooden cross in the chancel area. Worshippers will be asked to observe silence when leaving the church.
Steve Farnsley is music director, and accompanist for the Chancel Choir is Mark Dorio. The church pastor is the Reverend Pete Nelson.
