Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Carson again comes to aid of fellow resident

The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: A silver dollar to the dozens of people, big and small, who responded to a plea from Brenda Boni asking for help to move to Texas. Boni was alone here in Carson City, suffering from debilitating diseases that could take her life. When Carson City residents heard of her need, they exceeded expectations. Boni's belongings will be packed up and shipped out on Monday. She will board a flight to Texas sometime in the coming days. Boni's wish was to be with her daughter, and Carson City aims to make that wish come true.

SILVER DOLLAR: A Silver dollar to Cameron Hardy, 22, who lost the fight after a four-year struggle with leukemia and complications from a transplant.

But without Cameron's candor, and that of his devoted mother, Michele Lynn, hundreds of Carson City residents would have never been tested as bone marrow donors.

While Cameron never found a bone marrow match among the more than 300 people who tested on his behalf, those who signed up as donors are now on a worldwide list and could someday do for someone else what we all wished we could do for Cameron.
