U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei presented a freshly struck 2021 Carson City Morgan Dollar to the Nevada State Museum on Tuesday morning.

This year marks the 100th anniversary since the Morgan Dollar was retired, but thanks to the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, the treasury is once again minting and issuing Morgan Dollars and will do so for as long as there is continued market interest in the coin.
“I think if you’re a history person, if you’re a culture person… It’s a phenomenally neat thing,” Amodei said at the event.
He also thanked the Director of the U.S. Mint, David Ryder, for helping him pass the legislation memorializing the coin. Ryder attended the event virtually.
Between 1878 and 1893, the Carson City branch of the U.S. mint (where the museum is now housed) produced over 13 million CC Morgan Dollars, making it the rarest version of the coin.
During a recent trip to the mint in Philadelphia, Amodei personally minted the 2021 CC Morgan Dollar that he presented to the museum.
Museum Director Myron Freedman accepted the coin, saying “It’s a wonderful moment in the history of the Nevada State Museum to add a 2021 Morgan Dollar with the CC printing mark on it to our collection.”
For folks hoping to see the coin, this upcoming Saturday, Sept. 18, the public is invited to visit the museum for free as part of Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day. The coin press will be up and running for a demonstration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Reno Coin Club will have a display up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
