James “Jim” Carlyle Burt U.S. Veteran

March 6, 1939 - February 2, 2021

James (Jim) Carlyle Burt, 81, passed away peacefully
February 2, 2021, in Spanish Fork, Utah, of
natural causes.

Jim was born March 6, 1939, in Cedar City, Utah, to
William Carlyle Burt and Barbara Benson. He was raised
in nearby Parowan, Utah, a point of fondness for him.
In high school he was a multi-sport athlete, competing
in track, basketball, and football. He was dubbed the
Galloping Ghost for his speed and agility on the football
field. He also participated in the drama and music
societies. He graduated from Parowan High School
in 1957.

He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints from 1960–1962 in the West Central
States Mission, serving in Montana and Wyoming.
Missionaries were allowed to bring a vehicle, and he
brought his red 1960 Chevy Corvair, making him a
popular companion.

He married Vesta Rae Barton of Paragonah, Utah, on
November 23, 1963, in the St. George Utah Temple. They
met as children and dated throughout high school. They
had three children. Jim supported his children with their
goals and was always pleased by their accomplishments.
He served as a member of the Utah National Guard
and U.S. Army Reserve before moving to Carson City,
Nevada, in 1970. Jim was a surveyor, draftsman, and
architect. He was interested in history, particularly pioneer
history and the opening of the North American West.
Jim enjoyed the outdoors and took his family on long
road trips where he was known for stopping at almost
every historical road marker to teach his children about
the places they visited. He was also an avid outdoor
photographer and enjoyed gifting his beautiful work.

Jim is survived by his three children: J. Carlyle (Susann)
Burt, Koral (Shawn) Reid, Robert (Anne) Burt; three
siblings: Roger Burt, Sally (Don) McAllister, Phillip
(Paulette) Burt; ten grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and little brother Wilson.

Many thanks to Legacy House of Spanish Fork and
Hearts for Hospice for their dedicated care.
